Nice design but unreliable
I bought four of these on July 7, 2024. As of today (February 18th, 2025), two of them have failed. From the beginning, all of them have been kind of flaky. I couldn’t get the system to recognize one of them at all. I tinkered with the cable several times, hoping it was that. Finally, I flipped the USB-C end 180 degrees and it worked right away. I wasn’t paying super close attention, but I could swear that when I turned it over, the cable inserted a hair bit more into the connector. For clarity for anyone that’s not clear on all these acronyms, orientation should not matter with USB-C. I replaced that cable with one from a dedicated USB cable vendor and that particular disk has worked since, although it’s still flaky. After that, any time one of these disks didn’t work right, I fiddled with the cables. That usually got them working again, although it usually didn’t make any sense. I typically wound up with it plugged in and routed the same way. I wound up replacing the cables on all four of the drives. It reduced the flakiness, but didn’t eliminate it.When the first disk failed, I just threw it away. They do have a warranty, but it didn’t seem like it was worth the drama. The early flakiness had already encouraged me to duplicate all the disks. When the second one failed, I cracked it open for grins. As you might have expected, these are just regular SATA SSDs with a regular SATA-to-USB header inside a custom plastic shell. I removed the SSD and connected it to a computer with a SATA-to-USB header from another manufacturer, and the SSD is fine. If anyone cares about this sort of thing, the SSD inside the one I opened is a Verbatim Vi550 S3.In retrospect, I wish I had done the same with the first drive that failed. It seems to me that the SATA-to-USB header in these things is garbage but the rest is fine.Interestingly, there is a sticker over the connection between the drive and the SATA-to-USB header that says you void the warranty by removing it. I could not find any way to get into the housing without violence. I ended up crushing a corner with vice grips and then ripping the two sides apart. I suspect that if I had stopped at that little sticker and sent in the disk with its demolished housing, they would not have honored the warranty anyway. To answer the obvious question of, “What was I doing when the unit failed?”: I turned off the computer that it was attached to (normal, expected way). A couple of hours later, I turned the computer back on. I did not touch the disk or its cable at any point in this sequence. The computer recognized the drive but it couldn’t find anything at all on it. If you have a DVD drive on a Windows computer with no disk inserted and you look at it in Disk Management, that’s what I saw for this drive. I did all the fiddling, then I tried it on five different computers, all with the same result. That’s when I broke it open.I have no complaints about speed or ease of use. It does what it’s advertised to do on those points. The housing is clearly durable while keeping the whole thing at a reasonably light weight.Sadly, the units are just too unreliable for me to recommend. It would be a fantastic bargain otherwise.

Beware: Breaks and no response from Verbatim
This inexpensive drive from what I THOUGHT was a reputable brand, worked just fine at first. Fast enough and had the correct capacity.Less than 60 days later, it failed out of the blue. Lights up, but will not keep a USB connection and will not show as a device on any system I plug in into.I contacted Verbatim via their website and detailed the problem. No response whatsoever. Amazon can’t help me because I’m past the return window.I’ll probably contact Verbatim again, but at this point I think I’m just out my money for a product that worked for just over 1 month.UPDATE: I opened a second ticket with Verbatim and have again received no response whatsoever. It’s been about 3 weeks since my first ticket and 1 week since my second. I’m extremely disappointed in what I thought was a well established professional company.
