FAILS TO CONNECT time and time again.
I bought a 2-pack of these cameras to add to my existing NightOwl wired + wireless home security system. Before ordering I checked the Night Owl website, and this series is on the compatibility list with my Night Owl DVR, so no problem. On my existing system, I’m currently running 5 wired cameras and a wireless doorbell. Connecting the doorbell wirelessly to my DVR was a snap, almost completely automatic. These cameras, on the other hand, were a very different story. There are several steps to the process, all accomplished within the NightOwl Protect app on your mobile device:1. From the NO Protect app on your mobile device, connect directly to the camera via WiFi;2. Once that connection is established, enter your WiFi SSID and password to connect the camera to your home network;3. Once the camera connects to WiFi, connect the camera to the DVR so that the video can be controlled and recorded like any other camera on the system. After unboxing the cameras, I started with the first camera. First, it had trouble connecting directly. After a couple of tries, I connected to the camera, and it asked me for my WiFi SSID and password, which I provided. It failed a couple of times on this step, and I had to reset the camera (with a paper clip in the tiny “Reset” hole) and start the process over again. After making it through the camera connection again, and then finally through the WiFi connection step, the app asked me if I’d like to add the camera to my DVR. I said “yes,” of course, and watched it spin for awhile before the “Something Went Wrong” error occurred. I retried several times, and always eventually got the same error message. So I reset the camera again, started at the beginning. Again, sometimes it would fail at the first or second steps, but several times it made it through to the third–but it NEVER successfully connected to my DVR system, even when I had the cameras within two feet of both the DVR and my Wi-Fi router.I unplugged the first camera and started over again with the second camera–the behavior was exactly the same. Multiple fails at various steps in the process, but it NEVER successfully connected to my DVR system. After spending time with Night Owl support (chat), the only thing they could suggest that I hadn’t already tried is that the camera runs only on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Since my router runs both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, I logged in to the router and turned off the 5GHz transmitter to make sure the camera was forced to connect on 2.4GHz. This time, the status bar during the “Add Camera to DVR” stage lasted much longer, giving me hope…only to end up with the same “Something went wrong” message.I’ve now spent a total of around 4 hours trying to make this work, and it’s time to stop. I’ll be returning these cameras for a refund shortly. The sad thing is that I still don’t know if the problem is with the cameras, the DVR or the app but I’ll start with trying a different model of camera.
