Ultra-Fast 40Gbps Speeds for Demanding Workflows: The D4 SSD NVMe enclosure delivers 40Gbps speeds, and it’s compatible with Thunderbolt 5/4/3, USB 4/3.2/3.1/3.0/2.0. It delivers speeds up to 3,224MB/s with 4x 990 PRO SSDs, or 1,608MB/s with a single SSD, ideal for 4K video editing and large file transfers. Note: No built-in RAID; supports four individual disks (soft RAID via third-party tools).
Massive 32TB Storage Capacity in a Compact Design: With support for four M.2 NVMe 2280 SSDs (up to 8TB each), this NVMe SSD enclosure provides up to 32TB of high-speed storage. Its book-sized, lightweight form factor fits seamlessly on desks, shelves, or in travel bags.
Whisper-Quiet Operation with Intelligent Cooling: An advanced active cooling system with temperature-controlled fans keeps the NVMe external enclosure silent (19dB(A) in standby) even under heavy loads. Four internal temperature sensors ensure optimal heat dissipation, protecting your SSDs while maintaining a distraction-free environment.
Universal Compatibility: The D4 SSD M.2 NVMe enclosure works as a plug-and-play storage expansion for Mac mini, a bootable macOS drive, or a high-speed Windows/Linux external drive. Comes with a 12V/2A power adapter and features wide voltage input compatibility (12V-20V), ensuring stable operation with various devices including Mac mini, Windows PCs, and mini-computers.
Automated Data Protection & Easy Backup: The included TDAS Mobile App lets you wirelessly back up photos/videos from iOS/Android devices, while TPC Backupper software enables scheduled Windows backups. Power-loss recovery ensures auto-restart after outages, making it server/NAS-ready.

Best 4 Bay Hub I Have Found
So far its everything I had hoped. Barely audible fan, easy to install drives, speed works for me though I did not test it (I am using 4TB drives). Seems to be little to not heat emanating from the hub during heavy usage. The insertion point for the drive is also raised just a tad, which allows me to use my drive that has the heatsink pad on the underside, which was not possible with other enclosures. I do wish daisy chain was possible, and also that it was a tad smaller, but so far this is the best 4 bay enclosure that I have found.

Quiet and well-built
I needed a storage solution I could scale but didn’t want to go all out with a NAS. This worked perfectly. I have a WD Black m.2 PCIe gen 4 drive in it now and I get a sustained write speed of about 2.9-2.9 Gb/s over my 40 Gb/s USB-C connection. I’m stoked because this cut my back time in half from my HDD. I wish I could interface a device like this straight to a PCIe slot because that would be about 5x faster. But this is still better than my HDD and I can expand the storage as needed. The quality is good and I’m happy with the enclosure. Also, the fans are always on but I can l’t hear them unless I literally put my ear to the unit.

Super fast and very quiet.
Excellent little enclosure! This thing is practically silent and runs so fast. I put 4 4TB drives in it to make a 16TB drive and I’m so happy with the performance.

Small, Quiet, and Fast SSD Enclosure with Inadequate Power Supply
The D4 SSD is small, quiet, and blazing fast when configured in RAID 0 with four 8TB WD Black SSDs. However, the included 24W power supply is not adequate to support the enclosure when all the slots are maxed out. At load, the enclosure will lose power, and you must pull one or more drives to reset to device. Have confirmed this with Terramaster support and they are sending me a replacement 100W adapter. Not sure why they thought a 24W adapter would be sufficient.Update August 21, 2025 – Terramaster sent me a 90W (12V, 7.5A) power adapter to replace the included 24 W adapter and I’ve been using it for the past several days without issue. This includes demanding work like video editing. They have indicated that moving forward they will be including a 48 W adapter (as of this update their website still shows a 24 W adapter). I really like this enclosure, but the power adapter issue was a bit of a hassle. However, Terramaster support and their sales team were responsive in identifying and addressing the issue. Will update again if anything changes with the performance or power.

Must buy now if your looking for expansion bay with gen 5 capabilities! It’s a beast
Best thermal routing I’ve seen in an expansion bay yet. I run gen 5 ssd and it doesn’t over heat like my ascisis did. It’s a tank a beast and everything else. Definitely get it if you need gen 5 capabilities with best thermal routing around. I’ve been using this for well over half a year now and it’s never failed me yet. Durable as hell and although it’s a little chonky it makes up for it quality . Simple to use , plug and play and no noise off of it really (I do have 2 laptop cool pads running at 4500rpm though so I prolly just can’t hear it lol)

Best DAS I’ve ever used, Small, quiet and reliable
The best purchases I have made. This unit is exactly as advertised, and has very good cooling that is whisper quiet. The unit divides the four lanes into one lane for each nvme, which means with a Gen 4 nvme, you get? 4×1 speeds, which is consistently above 1500mb/sec Read and write, sustained. For additional cooling, you can add heatsinks and there is definitely sufficient room. I have four nvmes in this unit, each with heat sinks, which are combined into a drivepool in Windows for a total of 10tb. I highly recommend this device for its quality, speed delivery, and quiet cooling. It’s also smaller than I expected.

This is what you want.
This is exactly what you’re looking for. Allows you to add four nvme drives with your own heatsinks. Before you ask, the fans are 50mm, and there are 3rd party fans available, but not Noctua yet. I did write to Noctua about 50mm fans, but they said they aren’t on the table at the moment. The fans in that it comes with are VERY quiet. This unit though works great with no problems. Does NOT have a big power brick, just a plug, which is a real plus. It’s well designed and slides apart with the removal of one thumb screw. I will likely buy another.

Terramaster D4: Lightning Speeds with Practical Limits
My experience with the Terramaster D4 SSD NVMe Enclosure has been very positive in terms of speed and versatility. The 40Gbps throughput and compatibility with USB 4/3.2/3.1/3.0 and Thunderbolt 5/4/3 make it extremely fast, suitable for heavy data tasks and backup workflows. However, using all four M.2 NVMe slots simultaneously really only makes sense if you have multiple smaller capacity drives. Trying to use four large 8TB drives doesn’t maximize performance since even a single 8TB NVMe drive can saturate the USB4 or Thunderbolt bandwidth by itself. You’ll be doing that only for large capacity which seems like a waste compared to buying a U.2 drive. You could possibly argue for wear leveling with a work requirement that bangs on a drive. Remember, EVERY SLOT IS ONLY 1X PCIE.One nice feature is the ability to use your own heatsinks, which can be a big plus for better thermal management. On the downside, the enclosure doesn’t provide full cooling for bare NVMe drives, so without heatsinks or additional cooling solutions, naked SSDs might run hotter than ideal during intensive use. Overall, this enclosure offers fantastic speed and flexibility for users with multiple drives, but best suited for setups where heat management and drive size align with its capabilities. RECOMMENDED!Oh wait… I don’t like that the case is plastic. Gosh, is that what you get for this price these days?

I bought the D4 SSD to expand my video editing workspace, and it has exceeded my expectations. If you are tired of paying the “Apple Tax” for internal storage, this is the answer.

Fast, portable, and easily dissipates heat.
